Affetto dalla sindrome di Marfan, responsabile della sua crescita abnorme, Mayhew era alto 2 metri e 18 centimetri: proprio la stazza che gli ha regalato il successo, ed è stata la causa dei numerosi problemi fisici che lo hanno colpito negli anni. Lo scorso 30 aprile è venuto a mancare nella sua casa del North Texas, a 74 anni, come annunciato dalla sua famiglia con un post su twitter.
